Call for Artists

The Suffolk Plein Air Festival committee invites you to apply to participate in the 2023 Suffolk Plein Air Festival competition and wet paint exhibit/sale.    The Awards Reception and Wet Paint Sale will be at the Suffolk Art League on Friday, September 8, 2023 from 6pm-9:30pm.   Up to three (3) works will be accepted for display and judging in artist’s preferred medium.  The Suffolk Plein Air Festival is hosted by the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, the Suffolk Art League, and Suffolk Tourism.

Works are for sale unless specified otherwise by the artist.  There is a 40% commission on all sales.  All items must remain on display until the end of the show at the Suffolk Art Gallery.  The application fee is $45, non-refundable.

Standards:

•       Up to three (3) works produced during the event will be displayed and judged.  

•       Two dimensional works must be framed or gallery-wrapped, and ready to hang with wire and screw eyes.   

•       Participation is open to only those artists selected by the judge to participate in the festival.

•       Please identify each piece with the labels provided on page 3.  

•       Submitting the OnlineJuriedShows.com application indicates your intention to participate, if selected.

•       Follow the instructions in the OnlineJuriedShows.com to submit two or three pieces to be reviewed for consideration as a participant.  An artist’s CV or resume is helpful, but not required. 

Optional Exhibition September 6-30, 2022:

Artists who are selected to participate are invited to bring up to two (2) previously completed works to display and sell in a separate exhibit at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts Gallery beginning Wednesday, September 6 through Saturday, September 30, 2023.  This exhibit will be open to the public.  There is a 40% commission on all sales.  Art work that does not sale must be picked up on September 30^th or Tuesday, October 3^rd.  Mailing is not an option. As noted, this is an optional event.

QuickDraw and Taste of Suffolk event Saturday, September 9, 2023: 

The Festival QuickDraw event is open to artists at all levels and ages.  Prior registration is encouraged, but not required.  Onsite registration will be open to participate as well.  The application fee to participate is $10, non-refundable.  A 20% commission will be deducted from sales made during the QuickDraw.

Judging of new Plein Air artwork: Friday, September 8, 2023 (4-5:30pm)

Awards Reception and Wet Pain Sale: Friday, September 8, 2023 from 6pm-9:30pm

Quick Draw and Taste of Suffolk event: Saturday, September 9, 2023 (Main Street)

Unsold Artwork Pick-up: Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 4pm to 5pm or Sunday, September 10, 2023 from 9am to 11am.

Artists’ payments sent: Early October, 2023

 All artwork for the Suffolk Plein Air Wet Paint Sale Exhibit must be removed from the Suffolk Art Gallery no later than Sunday, September 10^th  between 9am-11am. 2023 Suffolk Plein Air Festival

Instructions:  For those artists who would like to participate in the optional Plein Air exhibit, please check in and deliver your work between 10am-4pm on the Second Floor of the Suffolk Center on Tuesday, September 5th. (110 W. Finney Ave., Suffolk, VA 23434). No early arrivals. Please complete this form and submit it with your entries for the optional art exhibit.  The exhibit will be in place from Wednesday, September 6 until Saturday, September 30.  This exhibit will be open to the public between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily.  A special reception will be held on Thursday, September 7th from 6:30pm – 8:30pm in the Gallery.  Please be sure to RSVP if you would like to attend this reception.  (757-630-9832) You must commit to a pick up date of September 30^th or October 3 for this exhibit.  No shipments will be made.

The information on this page will be used to type labels for each piece, so please write legibly.  We will also use this information to process payments at the end of the festival, so please be sure to include your complete address.
