Carmel Art Association
Carmel Art Association's Call for New Artist Members 2024

Annual Call for New Artist Members

CARMEL ART ASSOCIATION
PO Box 2271, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California 93921

The Carmel Art Association is seeking local artists of exceptional talent and professional skills for full artist membership. The jury will be looking for artists that demonstrates a consistent, high-quality execution and a recognizable, individual style in their body of work.

Along with the aforementioned qualities, the jury will be looking for an enthusiastic and supportive spirit for our unique non-profit endeavor.

Our jury process will include a preliminary on-line jurying, followed by an invitation of up to 6 finalists to present work at an interview for the final selection of new artist members.

The jury consists of the 15-member CAA board of directors. Roughly a third of the board members change each year.

Eligibility:

•    Applicants must have resided full time within thirty-five driving miles of Carmel Art Association for at least one year prior to application.
•    You must document having shown your work in at least one juried competition and one gallery.
•    Artists may submit work in one category only: two-dimensional or three-dimensional. Artists can submit multiple mediums but only in an individual category: 2D or 3D. For example, an artist can submit paintings in both watercolor and oil, however an artist cannot submit both watercolor paintings and bronze sculpture.

Art Categories:

•  Two-dimensional:  Any original artwork in mediums including but not limited to: oil, acrylic, watercolor painting, or fine art printmaking. Work must have been completed within the last 24 months. No work generated by a photo process (digital or film photography or graphics,) ink-jet giclée, four-color reproductions, or machine-produced work will be considered. (Limited use of some pre-printed material in collage work may be considered.)

• Three-dimensional: At the CAA, work in the “3-D” category will be defined as fine art sculpture whose sole purpose is contemplation and aesthetics. The CAA will not show “arts and crafts” or decorative arts and will therefore not show any of the following:

vessels of any kind (bowls, pitchers, jugs, etc.), jewelry, furniture, or other craft. Work must have been completed within the last 36 months.

• If a sculpture weighs more than 50 lbs. it will be the sole responsibility of the artist to move it during installations or upon sale. This means the sculptor must be present for the installation or the piece doesn’t get moved and if it doesn't move for three consecutive months, it must be removed from the Gallery.

• The artist must accept that sculptures of fragile mediums (i.e., ceramics, glass or stone), if damaged or broken, are not covered by Gallery insurance (theft or fire excepted). If damage or breakage occurs during monthly installations, no artist member will be held responsible and, if due to its fragile nature, the sculpture is not moved for three consecutive months it must be removed from the Gallery.

New members are required to participate in a “New Members Show” at the Art Association in June. Your show will consist of some or all (depending on available space), of the original ten juried artworks.

Applicants who are accepted to the Carmel Art Association are initially accepted as provisional members. After a period of six months, the Board will decide whether new members are to be accepted as permanent members.

Acceptance for permanent membership is judged principally on the basis of whether work brought in during the period of provisional membership is of the quality indicated by the work submitted with the original application, as well as your active participation in the Association.

Participation:

The Carmel Art Association is one of the oldest cooperative art organizations in the United States. Because this is an artist owned and operated association, members are required to participate in and contribute to the operation of the gallery aside from displaying their work. All members must volunteer a minimum of 12 hours per year.

If accepted for membership in the Carmel Art Association, you are agreeing to pay annual dues of $300.00, participate in monthly events, and volunteer at least 12 hours of your time per year.
