Art in the Loft
Forgotten Spaces 2017

Deadline has been extended

until September 10, 11:59 pm. PT

FORGOTTEN SPACES

We are excited to announce our Second Annual Juried Art Show entitled Forgotten Spaces, opening October 5, 2017.  We are privileged to have Betty Bea Washburn as our juror from Bellaire, MI. With her guidance, we look forward to a spectacular show.

Ours is a truly unique gallery. The gallery has over 7,000 square feet of open loft space devoted to the exhibit of fine art by local, regional and national artists. We also offer visual and culinary art workshops, educational activities, and arts-centered community events. The gallery is open to the public and can be used by members for private functions and we look forward to exhibiting artist’s work from all around Michigan, work in all sizes, subjects, and media, except film.

We really love art – in all media. As well as looking for skill in the use of a variety of materials, we look for how well that medium relates to the concept and how fully the artist’s intention or concept is presented and realized. The juror’s awards will reflect that artistic judgment.

Call to Artists for Submissions:
Submission Deadline:  September 10, 2017
Gallery Exhibition Dates:  October 5 – November 9, 2017

About The Juror:
Betty Bea Washburn has been a professional watercolorist for the last 30 years. Before settling in northern lower Michigan, Betty Bea was a public school art teacher in the Marshall Public School system. Today she finds inspiration for her large and vibrant watercolors in area landscapes, gardens and historical sites, especially those on Mackinac Island.

Washburn is intrigued by watercolor relationships: the harmony between the physical properties of the medium, the effect of atmosphere on the subject matter, and the use of color to create an internal glow.

Her watercolor journey which included study under Nita Engle, has led to an intuitive style of painting achieved by floating color on paper surface and pouring atmospheric colors to achieve glowing light effects.

Show Details
THEME:
Every abandoned space or object…quiet place in nature…a moment passing in time retains a feeling of what it once was. A railway station, a beautiful house…an overgrown field…a memory left behind. When we strip away all of the things man adds - furniture, presence, etc., we see a different kind of powerful beauty in these places, now full of space and mystery.

We look forward to filling the gallery with work that embodies how you, the artist, perceives this theme, whether it be abstract, literal, color or black & white.
