The 4th Annual International Society of Scratchboard Artists (ISSA) exhibition is an International art competition dedicated to presenting scratchboard art as a fine art medium. This year, the competition allows Associate, Active, Signature, and Master members of ISSA, and non-member Scratchboard Artists the opportunity to exhibit their work and compete with artists working in the same medium, as well as have their work seen by the public in a high-quality venue.
Definition of Scratchboard Art:
Scratchboard Art is a two-dimensional, subtractive medium that involves the use of abrasive tools to directly remove a surface layer of one value (typically dark) to expose a secondary layer of a contrasting value (typically white). The majority of the values within the artwork should be achieved by varying the amount of surface layer that has been scratched away or left. Reapplying of transparent mediums over the initial scratching is permissible, but the integrity of the underlying scratching should remain visible. Works may be color or black and white.
NOTE: If you are unsure if your work will qualify by this definition, please e-mail an image to the Exhibition Director at the above e-mail address before submitting your entry, and the ISSA board of directors shall make a ruling on its eligibility. (This ruling will not guarantee inclusion in the show, only whether we feel it meets or does not meet the definition of Scratchboard Art as set out by ISSA.)
Persons not following the rules laid out in this prospectus may have their work excluded without further consideration.
Eligibility:
This contest is open to scratchboard artwork only, but may include any subject matter or style. The exhibition is open to all scratchboard artists. Artists under the age of 18 must have parental consent to enter. All artwork must be original work executed by the submitting artist, and works based on photographs must have the photographer’s written permission before entering that work. Works completed in workshops or from a kit are not eligible. Submitted works must have been completed in the past 3 years.
All selected work is expected to be presented in a professional looking manner suitable for gallery display. All works not on cradled boards must be framed. Works must be equipped with hanging wire. Works may be behind plexiglass, glass or framed without cover. Works not covered must have adequate layers of a protective spray to avoid risk of incidental scratches in the regular handling of your work.
All works must be available for sale (U.S. Dollars). The Gallery will handle the sale of displayed works. The artist may become a member of the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center for a cost of $30.00. If an artwork is sold during the exhibition, the Gallery will take a 30% commission for non-members or 20% for members. In addition, they will collect a 10% commission from the listed price, which will be paid to ISSA. Works may not be removed before the conclusion of the exhibition – even if sold.
Divisions:
Open – This category is open to all Associate, Active and Signature members of ISSA, and to the Public. Artists under the age of 18 must have parental consent to enter.
Master – A category for existing ISSA Master Members. ISSA Master Members may submit up to two works to the exhibition without paying jury fees. They must still submit the entry form with information about the works being submitted to the exhibition to: www.onlinejuriedshows.com by the entry deadline.

Approximately 85 - 100 works will be selected for the exhibition. No more than two entries will be accepted into the show from a single artist. If insufficient entries are submitted to the show by the deadline, additional worthy works may be selected for inclusion.

At least $3000 in prizes will be presented; Three cash awards shall be awarded in the Open Category and two cash awards in the Master Category. Both Open and Masters categories will also present Award of Excellence certificates. Additionally, open to both levels, a People’s Choice Award will be presented. Depending on sponsorship, additional awards may be given.
Master Member Division shall be judged separately from the Open Division (except People's Choice).
Jurors:
Three ISSA Master Scratchboard Artists (MSA) will be assigned by the ISSA Board of Directors to jury the Open division and assign awards.
The juror for 2015 Master’s Category is Paula Waterman. She is a “Signature” Member of both the American Society of Marine Artists and the Society of Animal Artists. Her work is represented in galleries in Maryland, Connecticut and New Jersey. For more information and to see a sample of Paula’s artwork, go to www.paulawaterman.com.

Additional shipping details will be sent to those with works selected for the exhibit.

All accepted work must match the submitted images. Submitted images may be used for exhibition publicity purposes, including posting on the ISSA web site. The artist will be credited for all images used.
ISSA reserves the right to exclude work that does not match the submitted digital image or is framed poorly.
Entries that are juried in must be sent for display in the exhibition. If artwork that has been juried in is sold prior to the exhibition, the same commissions and fees must be paid to the gallery and/or ISSA as if the artwork was sold during the exhibition. If an artwork that has been juried in is not sent for display in the exhibition, fees already paid are not refundable. Artwork that is juried in and not sent by the artist is not eligible to be submitted for any future ISSA annual exhibition.
Reasonable care will be taken to ensure the safety of artwork while in our care. However, the ISSA will not be held liable for any damage or loss during the delivery, exhibition, removal, or return shipping of art work.
Artists who ship work for the exhibition are responsible for all costs incident thereto, including insurance, international fees, and shipping artwork both to the show and its return if the artwork does not sell. ISSA will not accept nor be held liable for any work damaged in shipment.
