JURORS OF SELECTION

Diane Rappisi, PSA, http://www.rappisiart.com/home
Diane Rappisi is a contemporary realist painter whose work fuses the light and chroma of the Cape Cod colorists with the form and structure of the traditional Italian and French academies. She works in oil, pastel, charcoal, and graphite.

Diane is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, and serves on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS).  She also holds memberships in the Salmagundi Club in New York, NY, and the Oil Painters of America, and the Pastel Society of Colorado.  Her work resides in numerous private and public collections across the country, and selected pieces have been published for the National Park Service in Glen Echo, MD. Diane's recent honors include "Best of Show' at the Pastel Society of Colorado's Mile High Juried International Exhibition, as well as awards from the International Association of Pastel Societies' 22nd Annual Exhibition in Albuquerque, NM, and the Pastel Society of America's 40th Annual Exhibition in New York City. She received an invitation to exhibit at The Butler Institute of Art in Youngstown, OH. She has participated in national and international group shows at Arte et Amicitae in Amsterdam; the National Arts Club in New York; S.R. Brennen Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico;  The Union League in Philadelphia, PA;  Kiley Court Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts;  Abend Gallery in Denver, Colorado;  Old West Museum in Cheyenne, Wyoming;  as well as exhibitions in Connecticut, Ohio, Texas and New Jersey . Her work was featured in the December 2014 issue of Pastel Journal.

Clark Mitchell, PSA, https://cgmitchell.com/
Mitchell has been designated a Master Pastelist by the Pastel Society of America and a Distinguished Pastelist by the Pastel Society of the West Coast, and he recently earned Signature Member status with the Laguna Plein Air Painters of America. He has received numerous awards in local as well as national competitions and has oil and pastel paintings included in art collections internationally. In 2005, Mitchell won Best of Show award at the Laguna Plein Air Invitational, and in 2011 won Best of Show in the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational. He was the cover artist for American Artist’s March 1993 issue. He was chosen as poster artist for the Sedona Plein Air Festival for 2008. In 2009, his painting was on the cover of Southwest Art’s annual landscape issue. In 2011, Mitchell’s painting was on the cover of The Pastel Journal’s June issue.   He received a bachelor’s degree in art from Colorado College in the seventies and moved to San Francisco to continue his studies at the Academy of Art College. Through personal exploration as well as study with artists Albert Handell, Skip Whitcomb, Michael Lynch and Bill Hook, Mitchell has developed the talent to create both tightly rendered scenes as well as looser, more abstract suggestions.

JUDGE OF AWARDS
Jeanne Rosier Smith, PSA, https://jeannerosiersmith.com
Jeanne Rosier Smith grew up painting, but first discovered pastel when a box of Nupastels arrived in the mail from an uncle in Massachusetts, 20 years ago. "You might enjoy these," he said.  He had no idea. She studied art at Georgetown University and later at the DuCret School of Art in New Jersey. After earning a Ph.D. in English and teaching college English for ten years, she made the switch to full time professional art in 2000. She now maintains a Pastel Studio school, teaches around the country, and is represented by several East Coast galleries. Her subjects are diverse: landscape, portrait, food, and the sea. She recently produced a 3-DVD series of instructional videos on painting seascapes, available on her website.

Smith is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, the American Society of Marine Artists, the Connecticut Pastel Society and the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, an IAPS Masters Circle member, and a juried artist member of the Copley Society, the Salmagundi Club, and Academic Artists of America. She has demonstrated at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and exhibited at the Massachusetts State House, the Guild of Boston Artists, and shown work at the National Arts Club and museums around the country. Her work has garnered top awards, including the Prix de Pastel (Best in Show) from IAPS, The International Association of Pastel Societies, a Grand Prize in International Artist Magazine Seascape Competition, and an Art Spirit Foundation Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Pastel at the American Artists Professional League. She has placed in the Pastel Journal’s Pastel 100 for the past five years, including first place in 2017. Her work has appeared in International Artist Magazine, American Art Collector, and The Pastel Journal, and she is a regular contributor to the Pastel Journal. Her paintings are in collections on five continents. She is represented by Cecil Byrne Gallery of Charleston SC, Gallery 31 of Orleans MA, Arnold Art of Newport RI and Powers Gallery of Acton MA.

Smith is a popular demonstrator and teacher: her Sudbury pastel studio offers weekly classes and weekend workshops. Upcoming workshops are scheduled for Long Island, Cape Cod, South Carolina, Oregon, Washington, New Hampshire, Texas, California, plus the Amalfi Coast in September and Southern France in June 2018.

LOCATION
The exhibition will take place at The Brazosport Center for the Arts and Sciences, founded in 1976. It is the cultural, educational, and artistic home for an entire community of approximately 320,000 people. Established as a result of the visioning and commitment of the region’s industrial and civic leadership, The Center has become a shining example of what is extraordinary about living and working in this unique location on the upper Texas Gulf Coast.
Owned and operated by the Brazosport Fine Arts Council, a 501(C)3 non-profit organization, The Center is a facility that has the responsibility of providing performance and exhibit space to its permanent residents, including the Brazosport Museum of Natural Science, the Brazosport Planetarium, the Center Stages Theater, and affiliate organizations such as the Brazosport Symphony Orchestra and Symphony League.
