ELIGIBILITY

·         Open to all living artists.

·         Watercolor West does not accept unframed paintings.

·         International entries must be shipped already framed .

·         Must be transparent watercolor, applied on a single piece of rag or wood pulp paperthat is free of pigment and embedded materials. Graphite pencil may be used only forplanning marks.

·         The following grounds, treatments, and media are excluded:

 

·         Opaque white paint of any kind such as titanium white, Chinese white, etc.

·         Gesso, matte medium, or any other priming material or exterior surface treatment.

·         Gouache, acrylics, or water-soluble oils.

·         Inks, metallic, or iridescent paint or products that leave a metallic, graphite, or reflective sheen.

·         Watercolor crayon, colored pencil, charcoal, pastel, Conte sticks, or Conte crayons.

·         Varnish, wax, wax crayon, oil sticks, or oil pastel.

·         Collage or surface constructions, impasto, embossing.

·         Watercolor resist, such as Frisket, that is not completely removed from the final painting.

·         Paper that is pigmented or has embedded materials.

·         Yupo or similar papers.

·         Canvas or canvas paper.

·         Use of digital images or enhancements printed on the paper.

·         All other grounds, treatments, additives, media, or art materials that do notconform to the spirit of the Exhibition.

·         Must be original work created by the artist. It may not be a copy, likeness, or derivative of another’s artistic creation (paintings and/or photographs). Work painted in a class or workshop or under the guidance of a teacher is not permitted.

·         Must be painted after January 1, 2016.

·         Maximum framed size not to exceed 48" on any side. Minimum image size showing in mat opening must not be less than 140 square inches (height x width).

·         Work previously exhibited at the City of Brea Art Gallery is not eligible.

JUROR

Keiko Tanabe www.ktanabefineart.com

Keiko was born in Kyoto, Japan. She earned a B.A. in Intercultural Communication and an M.A. in International Education from UCLA. She collaborated with her father as an illustrator on the publication ‘Through the Azure Sea and Sky of Provence’ in 2003. In the same year, she took a workshop with Alvaro Castignet and discovered the joy of plein-air painting.

 

Keiko Tanabe has resided in San Diego for 25 years and over the last several years has become well-known in Southern California as an accomplished plein air watercolor artist. She creates beautiful expressive images of every day city scenes and landscapes. She has traveled extensively and led workshops from San Diego to Sequoia National Park, Tuscany to Thailand, and Japan. Her work has been published in numerous artist and watercolor magazines, and has won many awards in North America, Europe and Asia.

 

She has also served as a juror for several major watercolor shows around the world. We are very pleased to announce that Keiko Tanabe will be our juror for 2019, and will conduct two workshops at the Brea Gallery ( www.breagallery.com ) in September 2019. AWARDS

·         Watercolor West anticipates distributing awards totaling $20,000 in cash and merchandise. Awards will be announced on October 12 th , 2019 at 6pm during the 51st Watercolor West International Juried Exhibition Opening Reception.

·         A catalog of all paintings in the exhibition will be produced in full color and will be provided to all members and to all entrants to the Exhibition.

EXHIBITION FEES

·         The Exhibition Fee for 1 or 2 paintings is $50 for members and $60 for non-members.

·         You may become a member of Watercolor West simultaneously with entering the Exhibition by paying $85: the annual dues of $35 and the $50 member Exhibition entry fee. As a member you will receive the reduced Exhibition entry fee, a quarterly newsletter, notification of seminars and special events, an annual Exhibition catalog, and your name and website listed alongside images of your artwork on the Watercolor West website.

·         You may pay your new membership fee or membership renewal along with the Exhibition entry fees online at www.OnlineJuriedShows.com after uploading your artwork.

·         Exhibition fees must be paid by the entry deadline for artwork to be considered.

·         Exhibition fees are not refundable in the event the painting is returned to the artist due to noncompliance with Watercolor West rules or non-conformance with the City of Brea Art Gallery framing requirements.

 

TO SUBMIT ENTRIES

·         Go to www.onlinejuriedshows.com (OJS)

·         Artist Account:

·         If you have an existing OJS Artist Account, login and go to “Your Artist Profile”, click on “ Personal Info” to verify that your name is spelled correctly (with capitalized first letter of your first and last names) and that your contact information is up to date. For non-US addresses, please include Country in your address on the “City, State, Zip” line.

·         If you do not already have an OJS account, you must set one up. Go to https://onlinejuriedshows.com/CreateNewAccount.aspx and fill out their "Create A New Artist Account” form in its entirety. Capitalize the first letter of your first and last name. For non-US addresses, please complete the Country field.

·         Enter Images and Information:

·         Before uploading your images, make sure they are smaller than 4MB, but at least 1920 pixels on the longest side at 72 dpi. Images should be in JPEG format, sRGB color space.

·         If you need help with how to photograph your work and properly size your images go to www.OnlineJuriedShows.com/help.aspx .

·         Find the OJS listing of the 51st Watercolor West International Juried Exhibition, click on “I want to enter this show ” and submit your image(s).

·         Submitted images must not include matting or frame. Crop the photos to include only the artwork.

·         Be sure your images are right side up.

·         List sizes up to the nearest inch.

·         Enter the title(s) of your painting(s) and other information exactly as you wish it to appear in the Exhibition catalog if it is selected .

·         Prepare to Receive Your Jury Notification:

·         Add Manager@OnlineJuriedShows.com to your contact list, or safe senders’ list so that the notification email does not go to your spam or junk folder.

 

NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTED WORKS

·         The Juror’s decision will be posted on your Artist Account at www.OnlineJuriedShows.com no later than July 24th, 2019 . You will receive an email notice to login to your account to verify your status. Click on “ Your Artist Profile ”, you will find the status under the thumbnail view of each of your images. Click on the letter below each of your thumbnails. Acceptance letters will include instructions on next steps.

·         A list of the Juror’s decisions will also be posted on www.watercolorwest.org no later than July 24, 2019 along with framing, shipping and delivery instructions under Exhibition, Information for Participants in the 51st Watercolor West International Juried Exhibition.

 

FINAL REVIEW

·         The WW Screening Committee will examine all delivered paintings for compliance with its Exhibition requirements.

·         The City of Brea Art Gallery will review all delivered paintings for conformance with its framing specifications.

·         The artwork must be the very same unchanged painting that was entered online. Alterations or substitutions of any kind may result in exclusion from this Exhibition and affect your eligibility to enter Watercolor West Exhibitions in the future.

·         The sales price stated at entry may not be changed.

·         Works not adhering to the specifications will not be exhibited and will be returned at the artist's expense.

·         Exhibition entry fees will not be refunded.

·         The decisions of the WW Screening Committee and of the City of Brea Art Gallery are final.

 

FRAMING REQUIREMENTS set by City of Brea Art Gallery

·         Your framed painting is expected to arrive with the painting and mat(s) properly secured into position, with both the interior and the exterior of the frame clean and free of debris, stains, scratches or breaks.

·         Plain wood or metal only. Flat finish only. No shiny metallic frames.

·         Must be completely flat (no fluting or raised grain) and with squared corners.

·         Black or neutral colors only such as beige, ivory, taupe, grey and shades of white. No bold colors.

·         Frame may be up 1.5 inch (3.81 cm) wide. Depth (space it sits off the wall) does not matter.

·         Only white mats, single or double matted. No colored liners.

·         Plexiglas only. No glass.

·         Ready to hang with proper picture hanging wire attached. No saw-tooth hangers.

Framed paintings not adhering to the City of Brea Art Gallery framing requirements will be disqualified and returned at owner’s expense. Exhibition fees are not refundable.

 

DELIVERING YOUR PAINTING

·         Accepted artists may hand deliver their framed work directly to the City of Brea Art Gallery at 1 Civic Center Circle, Brea, CA 92821 on Sunday, September 29 th from 3pm to 5pm.

·         Artists may ship to Shipping Agent Orange County Fine Art Storage (OCFAS) as instructed in the acceptance letter. OCFAS will charge a $65 handling fee. Expenses of shipping to and from Shipping Agent OCFAS will be the responsibility of the artist. Do not ship directly to the City of Brea Art Gallery. Insurance while in transit is the responsibility of the artist.

 

LIABILITY

Works will be handled with the utmost care. Neither Watercolor West nor the City of Brea Art Gallery, nor any agent will be responsible for damage or loss to any work of art submitted. City of Brea Art Gallery provides fine art insurance coverage while work is on their premises. Other insurance coverage, such as during transit, is the artist's responsibility. By entering this Exhibition, you agree to allow an image of your exhibited artwork to be used without charge for advertising and/or promotion in the furtherance of the Exhibition prior to and/or after the Exhibition.

 

SALES

Exhibited works will be considered for sale at the price indicated during the submission process. Works not for sale must be designated "NFS." Works that are not for sale must provide an insurance value (70% of the selling price). A declared value must be able to be backed up by documentation in the event that a claim is filed. The City of Brea Art Gallery will handle all sales during the exhibition and will take a 30% commission.

 

RETURN OF WORK

·         Artwork may not be removed for any reason prior to the close of the Exhibition on Sunday, December 15th at 5pm.

·         Hand-delivered work may be picked up Sunday, December 15th between 5pm and 6pm or Monday, December 16th between 10am to 12pm.

·         Shipping Agent OCFAS will only return works shipped with paid return shipping label.

·         Paintings not picked up by Monday, December 16th at 12pm will be charged a daily storage fee by the City of Brea Art Gallery.
