JUROR – Patricia Bates

Pat’s mother was an artist and art teacher, fashioning sculptures from root fences on the family farm left over from the 1700s.  Several of these are on display at the Moore Memorial Library upstate New York.  The rest of the family was an array of birders, engineers, farmers, photographers, architects, and mechanics, sometimes all of the above.  Pat is trained as a research scientist with a PhD from The University of Arizona, diverged for about 30 years for a career in accounting and has reconnected with her roots since.  She has become an accomplished photographer, as well as studying art with Artist Co-Op 7 at both the American Jewish University and the SFVACC.  Her work has been exhibited in various local and distant venues, and she is a member of California Art League and Artist Co-Op 7.

Pat currently serves on the Boards of the SFVACC and the Encino Neighborhood Council (ENC), is past treasurer of the SFV Audubon Society, and has served on many other boards.  As the ENC liaison to the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Areas Steering Committee, she has been involved in environmental issues in our community for many years.   She has especially concentrated on addressing problems in the Sepulveda Basin, which is governed by a bewildering array of state, federal and local agencies. The issues include homelessness, problems with enforcement of regulations, and coordination of responses to issues – all are the problems of wildlife areas adjacent to a metropolis.

CALL FOR ENTRIES

The San Fernando Valley Arts & Cultural Center invites artists and photographers to explore their artistic relationship with flora, fauna, and natural features in nature.  Think of natural elements and anything from insects and birds to majestic animals to El Capitan to a spectacular crystal. PERSONAL APPEARANCES

All exhibiting artists may visit the Center to promote their art.  Interaction with visitors to the Center is encouraged.  Participants may mail or bring in printed collateral for promotion purposes.

ARTWORK FORMAT, PRESENTATION & SIZE REQUIREMENTS

Artwork submissions are limited to six (6) original artworks per artist in the following media: drawing, mixed media, collage, photography, painting, digital art and sculpture.  Maximum width of any painting must not exceed 90” including the frame.  Art must fit through a 6’6” high x 36” wide door.  There is a premium wall which is 17’ long for large size works.  All works on paper must be matted, framed and covered with glass or Plexiglas.  Frames must be in good condition.  Entries must be dry, properly prepared for exhibition and properly equipped with wire for hanging.  The wire and eye screws must not show when the artwork is hung.  Gallery wrapped canvas does not require framing unless the edges are unfinished.  Maximum weight per hanging piece up to 36" wide is 30 lbs.  For wider pieces, not over 10 pounds per foot of width.  Damaged artwork, mats, frames, glass and Plexiglas, and frames which have sawtooth hanging brackets will not be accepted.  Sculptures are limited to a 6’ x 6’ footprint.  The SFVACC has a limited number of small and medium pedestals, available on a first-come basis.  It is recommended that artists supply their own pedestals or bases.  Minimal assistance available moving large or heavy pieces.

We suggest that when wiring, have the wire hooked to the sides about 6-8” from the top, and when stretched, 3” from the top in the middle.  This makes hanging the exhibit much easier!

ENTRIES & FEES

Entries will be made online to Online Juried Shows:  www.onlinejuriedshows.com.  Up to 3 entries: $45.00.  Up to 3 additional entries at $5 each.  Payment is made through Online Juried Shows via credit card or Pay Pal.  Fees are non-refundable.  There is no guarantee of acceptance into the exhibit.

FORMAT FOR DIGITAL IMAGES (JPGS) AND HOW TO SEND THEM

All entries must be submitted in a digital JPEG or JPG format, either cropped to remove background or on a black background without a mat.  Photos of the artwork should not be taken through glass or Plexiglas.
