California Art League
Wild World

The California Art League has been identifying one exhibit per year as our most prestigious, as the winner of the best in show receives an engraved Gold Medal, in addition to a cash prize of $500.  The gold medal design was conceived of by Henry Von Wolf, CAL’s (formerly the Valley Artists Guild) founder.  His bio can be found on CAL’s website under “History”.  He was a nationally recognized professional sculptor with  many major works on display throughout the country.  This year, due to the corvid-19 problems…i.e. no way we can have a gallery exhibit, we are opening up the exhibit to international as well as national and local artists, as shipping will not be a problem and the exhibit will be on-line exclusively, with all accepted pieces on prominent display on CAL’s webs site.

October 18th - Saturday December 31st 2020

JUROR – Victor Picou

“I retired from a 30-year career in medicine as a Physician Assistant, to devote my life to a world of art. During most of my medical years, I kept busy in my art studio and by facilitating events for sculptors. Studies at different schools, meeting other artists, and obtaining a BFA at the University of Washington, provided me with an inspiring framework from which to develop a style. Abstract expressionism in drawing and painting, bold, infinite curves in wood and stone, sensual, warm expressions in clay - all these elements can be easily seen in my portfolio that spans 5 decades. My art reflects my values in socio-political events, nature, organic form, human gesture and whimsy.

Having been an early member of Northwest Stone Sculptors Assn. in Seattle, (1986), my leadership established their annual symposium, which is still a very successful event for stone sculptors. My insights helped develop other symposiums also in Oregon, British Columbia, and California. I was the first president for California Sculptors Symposium, 501c3, 2005.

Up until the pandemic, I had been a regular volunteer art tutor since 2007 at Tierra del Sol, a school for adults with developmental disabilities. As an active member of Pasadena Society of Artists since 2004, I served as PSA Co-Program Director for 3 years, and as President since 2013.

While always busy in my own studio, I have exhibited frequently in the LA area, Palm Springs, and wherever PSA has exhibited. “

CALL FOR ENTRIES – OPENS August 20, 2020

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: Midnight, October 4, 2020

Artwork will be juried using digital images (jpgs) through Online Juried Shows. Submitted artwork reflects the artist’s interpretation of the theme, “Wild World.”  We are looking for artwork which reflects our hope that you will have some fun with this theme.  Be creative.  Make the ordinary extraordinary.  Look at your work differently and show us your best work for this annual INTERNATIONAL OPEN exhibit.  Remember CAL’s themes are only a step-off point to challenge you into new and interesting directions.

The California Art League exhibit, “Wild World” is open to all CAL and non-CAL entrants who wish to share their best work.  CAL members dues must be current for 2020; New members join CAL as part of the entry process.  The reduced membership rate for new members is exclusively for artists who are not and have never been a member of CAL.

CAL is dedicated to exhibiting excellent works of fine art which promote the artist’s artistic ability, vision and creativity.  In this respect all artwork should be original and created from conception to completion by the artist within the last three years and not previously shown in any CAL Show.  Artists are permitted to use their own photos as reference materials in the creation of their artwork, but not photos from other sources. No artwork copied from other artists work, copyrighted work, published or internet photos, or created under the direct guidance of an instructor are eligible.

Artwork submissions can be in any of the following media:  drawing, painting, photographs and digital art, mixed media, collage and sculpture

Entries will be made online to Online Juried Shows  Artwork submissions are limited to five (5) original artworks per artist in the following media:   drawing, painting, photographs and digital art, mixed media, collage and sculpture.

One or two entries: $45.00 for CAL members in good standing and $60 for non-CAL members.  The $15 surcharge is a one-time offer that gives the new artist membership into CAL at a discount...good for the rest of the year.

All entrants may enter additional artwork for a $5 per piece fee up to a total of 5 entries. Payment is made through Online Juried Shows via credit card or Pay Pal.  Fees are non-refundable. There is no guarantee of acceptance into the show.

New members whose work is juried in to this show will be considered “exhibiting members” and will be eligible to submit work as an exhibiting member for acceptance in all future CAL shows.

All entries must be submitted in a digital JPEG format.  Take photo or art with a digital camera on a black background (if cropping is not possible) without a mat and not through glass. Image quality is critical!  Poor photography and presentation will affect acceptance by the juror. The digital image must represent the painting.  Directions for submitting work to Juried Online Shows is clearly described on the website in several topics listed on the sidebar of the main page:

If your 2-D work has special feature(s) that cannot be properly represented in a  single image, enter it as a 3-D entry and include 1 or 2 supplemental images that emphasize that property  (texture, brush work, special reflections, etc.)

If all else fails, email or call Ken for questions, or 818 996-1630.  Please leave a message which includes your phone number, who you are and why you are calling and I will return your call.

All members submitting work will be notified of acceptance by e-mail by October 15, 2020.

This will be virtual show.  Do Not Send In Your Artwork.  All accepted entries and winners will be displayed as the on-line exhibit on the CAL website, and also the Online Juried Shows website’s “Published Shows” section.

Awards presentation will be virtual: October 17, 2020  Award winners will receive a certificate plus the listed award prizes.

Any artwork entered in this show may be reproduced for advertising, marketing, and promotional purposes for this show or future shows without consent of or notification to the artist or the artist’s agent.

Since this show will be virtual all sales will be handled by the individual Artist. Any and all sales tax will be the responsibility of the Artist.  No commission will be taken by the California Art League

In order to try to generate more sales, we are hoping that all of our artists will share the email addresses of three or four of their collectors.  That way when we announce the show, we can send out announcements to a wide range of prospective collectors and make our shows even more exciting and relevant.
