California Art League
Affordable Art: Holiday Gift Exhibit

California Art League

“Affordable Art”

CAL’s 2020 Holiday Gift Exhibit

Just to mix things up a bit, and give our members an opportunity to make some lower cost holiday gift pieces, CAL is presenting its first Affordable Art exhibit, with no item for sale for over $300.  This an exhibit ONLY for CAL members with membership paid up thru December 31, 2020.

Tuesday, December 1, 2020 - Saturday December 31st 2020

JUROR – Ken Ronney

Ken is past President of CAL and currently CAL’s Exhibit Chair.  He is also the Vice President of the San Fernando Valley Arts and Cultural Center which was, for the last 6 years, CAL’s indoor exhibit venue.

Ken took an early retirement from an engineering career and soon thereafter got involved in sculpting.  His first few pieces were common static works, but then he found his calling, re-purposing his engineering training and skills in making motorized kinetic sculptures.  These are designed to have absolutely no functional purpose other to amuse and entertain the viewer….in stark contrast to the engineering projects that ALWAYS were burdened with specifications, budgets, schedules, management, etc.  Ken found it an absolute revelation to be free of all that and be able to work on a piece till he was satisfied with it in every detail….without the inevitable compromises that working in a commercial environment included.

Acceptance into the exhibit and awards for “Affordable Art” will be selected by Ken Ronney

Awards and prizes will be presented at the on-line Zoom Video reception.  Since this is a low-cost works show, there will not be any cash prizes for winners, only certificates and a virtual handshake.  Awards will be:

First Place

Second Place

Third Place

Four Awards of Distinction

CALL FOR ENTRIES – OPENS October 1, 2020

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: Midnight, November 15, 2020

Artwork will be juried using digital images (jpgs) through Online Juried Shows:   Submitted artwork reflects the artist’s interpretation of the theme, “Affordable Art.”  We are looking for artwork which reflects our hope that you will have some fun with this theme.  Be creative.  Make the ordinary extraordinary.  Look at your work differently and show us your best work for this first-time low-cost exhibit.  Remember CAL’s themes are only a step-off point to challenge you into new and interesting directions.

The California Art League exhibit, “Affordable Art” is open to all CAL members who wish to share their affordable work.  CAL members’ dues must be current for 2020;

CAL is dedicated to exhibiting excellent works of fine art which promote the artist’s artistic ability, vision and creativity.  In this respect all artwork should be original and created from conception to completion by the artist within the last three years and not previously shown in any CAL Show.  Artists are permitted to use their own photos as reference materials in the creation of their artwork, but not photos from other sources. No artwork copied from other artists work, copyrighted work, published or internet photos, or created under the direct guidance of an instructor are eligible, with the exception of items used in collage works.

In general, works may be entered without frames or hanging hardware.  Artwork on paper may or may not be mounted, matted, framed and behind glass or Plexiglas, but this should be stated in the description.  Then, the artist and buyer can work out details of presentation and mounting.  If the artist feels that a special presentation requires framing, etc., they should state it in the title (Framed).

Artwork submissions can be in any of the following media:  drawing, painting, photographs and digital art, mixed media, collage and sculpture

Entries will be made online to Online Juried Shows  Artwork submissions are limited to eight (8) original artworks per artist in the following media:   drawing, painting, photographs and digital art, mixed media, collage and sculpture.

Up to 8 entries: $25.00 for CAL members.  Payment is made through Online Juried Shows via credit card or Pay Pal.  Fees are non-refundable. There is no guarantee of acceptance into the show.

All entries must be submitted in a digital JPEG format.  Take photo or art with a digital camera and crop out background, or if that is not possible, use a black background without a mat and not through glass. Image quality is critical!  Poor photography and presentation will affect acceptance by the juror. The digital image must represent the artwork.  Directions for submitting work to Juried Online Shows is clearly described on the website in several topics listed on the sidebar of the main page:

If your 2-D work has special feature(s) that cannot be properly represented in a single image, enter it as a 3-D entry and include 1 or 2 supplemental images that emphasize that property (texture, brush work, special reflections, etc.)

If all else fails, email or call Ken for questions, or 818 996-1630.  Please leave a message which includes your phone number, who you are and why you are calling and I will return your call.

All members submitting work will be notified of acceptance by e-mail by October 17, 2020.

This will be virtual show.  Do Not Send In Your Artwork.  All accepted entries and winners will be displayed as the on-line exhibit on the CAL website, and also the Online Juried Shows website’s “Published Shows” section.

Award winners will receive notification by November 17.  Awards presentations will be made at the on-line Zoom Video reception

Any artwork entered in this show may be reproduced for advertising, marketing, and promotional purposes for this show or future shows without consent of or notification to the artist or the artist’s agent.

All sales will be handled by the individual Artist. Any and all sales tax will be the responsibility of the Artist.  No commission will be taken by the California Art League.  All sales are final.  If a sale is made, it is the responsibility of the artist to notify Ken Ronney, so that the sale can be indicated on the web site (rather than the selling price.)

In order to try to generate more sales, we are hoping that our artists will  share the email addresses of three or four of their collectors.  That way when we announce the show, we can send out announcements to a wide range of prospective collectors and make our shows even more exciting and relevant.
