JUDGE – James Kroner

Throughout his MFA course work at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco James Kroner cultivated a well defined focus that would guide his career and reputation as a cityscape painter. His master's thesis ‘The Energy in Nature’ became what he is known for throughout his artistic career. James grew up in the Bay Area, an optimal location to observe the Pacific Ocean’s atmosphere, its incoming fog and rain, and how shifting weather affects the urban landscape. Now residing in the PNW since 2019, his subject matter predominately being cityscapes and European scenes has continued to evolve.

While still an undergrad at the Academy of Art in 2010, James began receiving awards including 1st Place for landscape painting at the Annual AAU Spring Show. The following year he won a full scholarship to study abroad in Italy before beginning his masters program in 2011. James later won the favored ‘Emerging Artist Award’ earning him a solo exhibition through the Academy of Art University’s Atelier Gallery in San Francisco in 2014. Immediately after, James won 1st Place Overall for the Plein Air Salon Competition and then 1st Place for LAPA’s summer juried exhibition and has gone on to win other notable awards since. James has exhibited his artwork in a large number of solo and group shows across the U.S. including the Salmagundi Club. He’s been featured in a number of magazine articles in American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur, and written for and featured in Plein Air Magazine. James has been teaching since 2014, with annual workshops in Europe and a variety of locations around the U.S. View his work and more info at www.jameskroner.com
