Bristol Art Museum Announces
A National Call for Art
A JURIED EXHIBITION – Works on Paper or of Paper
Theme: When in the Course of Human Events…
· 2026 Rhode Island Guest Artist is Susan Hardy - https://www.susanhardyart.com/
On View: Sunday February 22 – Friday, April 10, 2026
Artist Reception on Sunday, February 22 | 2:00 to 4:00
In honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States, the Bristol Art Museum invites artists from across the country to submit works on paper for our annual national call for art. As part of the town of Bristol's commemorative celebrations, this exhibition will reflect on the enduring words of the Declaration of Independence.
"When in the Course of Human Events…” We invite artists to reflect on what follows this iconic opening line of the Declaration, and what it means to experience human events in our contemporary world.
When in the course of human events, how do we respond to moments of upheaval or celebration? Whose voices are heard, and whose stories remain untold? What declarations do we make today—individually or collectively?
From personal milestones and shared cultural experiences to political movements and societal shifts, artists are encouraged to explore the moments that shape our collective story, and consider the evolving landscape of freedom, identity, and community.
Working in any medium on paper or of paper, from drawing, painting, and printmaking to collage, photography, or experimental forms, we welcome interpretations that are bold, intimate, reflective, or challenging. Paper, like the documents that have historically recorded our past, serves as both a material and metaphor—a space for declaration, protest, remembrance, and hope.
We invite you to declare, reflect, and respond. What does it mean to witness, participate in, or remember the course of human events?
Cash Awards: TBA
