California Dreams”

CAL’s 2022 Spring LIVE, Gallery Exhibit

SHOW DATES and VENUE

January 7 thru January 27, 2022.  This will be CAL’s first live gallery exhibit in almost two years, since the pandemic caused us to cancel gallery exhibits. The exhibit will be at the Betsy Leuke Center for Creative Arts in Burbank.

JUROR – Brooke Harker

Brooke Harker is a contemporary artist based in Los Angeles, California.

Harker calls herself a historian of the ordinary. Her paintings are a collaboration with all of the people who’ve contributed to a place over time: architects, engineers, and pedestrians whose colorful fashion landed in view at the perfect moment. All of their individual actions brought together one moment, fated to be captured on canvas.

Harker’s paintings live in collections all over the world, including with the Prince of Morocco in the Royal Palace in Rabat and as part of The Chase Center Art Collection in San Francisco, home to the Golden State Warriors. Her artworks are part of the cultural heritage collection of The U.S. Embassy Tokyo, Japan in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Art in Embassies after debuting at The National Art Center in Tokyo in 2019. Her art also resides in numerous private collections of Hollywood creatives.

From 2015-2019 her solo exhibit toured Italy and appeared in numerous group exhibits and Bienales curated by Alfio Borghese in Italy and California since they first met at the Oceanside Museum of Art for the opening of California Dreaming: An International Portrait of Southern California. Borghese first featured Harker’s art in Italian press, in 2014 when he hosted the exhibit at Palazzo della Provincia di Frosinone, Italy that went on to tour to the Oceanside Museum of Art and the Riverside Museum of Art in California from through 2015.  Since then she has worked with Borghese on numerous exhibitions in various locations in Italy to the coordination of Italian artists to exhibit in the U.S. and American artists to exhibit in Italy.

It is her passion when traveling to meet artists, visit studios and connect people in the arts community to one another, a love particularly fueled by her time with Prince Borghese. It is her belief that the more artists shine their art into the world, the better world we create as everyone can use the possibility of creativity in their lives.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: Midnight, December 8, 2021 Pacific time

Artwork will be juried using digital images, (jpegs), through Online Juried shows.

Submitted artwork reflects the artist’s interpretation of the theme, “California Dreams.” We are looking for artwork which reflects our hope that you have some fun with this theme. Be creative.  Make the ordinary, extraordinary. Look at your work differently and show us your best work for this open exhibit. Remember CAL’s themes are only a stepping-off point to challenge you to new and interesting directions.

ELIGIBILITY   The California Art League exhibit, “California Dreams”, is open to all CAL and non-CAL entrants who wish to share their best work. CAL members’ dues must be current for 2022. New members join CAL as part of the entry process. The reduced initial membership rate for new members is exclusively for artists who have never been a member of CAL.

ARTWORK SUBMISSION CRITERIA AND CONTENT

CAL is dedicated to exhibiting excellent works of fine art which promote the artist’s artistic ability, vision, and creativity. In this respect, all artwork should be original and created from conception to completion by the artist within the last three years, and not previously shown in any CAL show. Artists are permitted to use their own photos as reference materials in the creation of their artwork, but not photos from other sources. No artwork copied from other artists work, copyrighted work, published photos, the Internet, or created under the direct guidance of an instructor are eligible.  The only exception is collage work which may include small portions of other artist’s work.  All images will also be reviewed by the Betsy Leuke gallery staff for appropriateness.

ARTOWRK SIZE, MEDIA, ENTRIES and FEES

Artwork submissions can be in any of the following media: drawing, painting, photographs, digital art, mixed media, collage and sculpture.  Hanging artwork (paintings, photos, etc.) shall not be more than 24” wide, including the frame. Weight of any hanging piece may not exceed 30 pounds. Installations with a footprint of not over 4 ft. x 4 ft. and 8 ft. high are accepted.  No performance art is accepted.

Entries will be made via jpeg images online to OJS. Artwork submissions are limited to five original artworks per artist.   Entries may be made in more than one medium.

Fees are:  One or two entries: $35.00 for CAL members with 2022 dues fully paid, and $55.00 for non-CAL members. The $20.00 surcharge for non-members is a one-time offer that gives the new artist membership into CAL at a discount, which is good for the rest of the year. All entrants may enter additional artwork for $5.00 per piece fee up to a total of 5 entries. Payment is made through OJS via credit card or PayPal. Fees are non-refundable. There is no guarantee of acceptance into the show. New members whose work is juried in to this show will be considered “exhibiting members”, and will be eligible to submit work as an exhibiting member for acceptance in all future CAL shows.

BIN ART ALLOWED FOR ACCEPTED ARTISTS

Accepted artists may, in addition to the pieces selected to hang in the exhibit, bring unframed 2D works for sale as bin art.  Artists must supply their own bin.

FORMAT FOR DIGITAL IMAGES (jpegs) AND HOW TO SEND THEM

All entries must be submitted in digital JPEG format. Photograph your art with a digital camera on a black background, (if cropping is not possible), without a mat or frame, and not through glass. Image quality is critical! Poor photography and presentation will affect acceptance by the juror. The digital image must represent the painting. Directions for submitting work to OJS is clearly described on the website in several topics listed on the sidebar of the main page: https://www.onlinejuriedshows.com//HowtoEnter.aspx.

If all else fails email or call Ken Ronney at 818 996-1630 or Kronney@aol.com

NOTIFICATION    All artists submitting work will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance by email by December 17, 2021.
